How do I set up Weather Watch?
Setting up the airport suitability section of OpsControl is made in two stages.
At the first startup, a default set of values is requested. These values will be used to cover all Departures, Destinations and Alternates, regardless of airport in use. These values can be edited at a later but need to be inserted before further modifications can be made.
The second stage covers the tailoring of the thresholds to suit specific airports. The default settings will always be used unless there are specified airport values. If that is the case, the airport values will override the default settings.
Reap the benefits of the easy 5-step guide to set your operation’s thresholds for:
- Dynamic and intuitive flight list color schemes for weather conditions affecting your fleet.
- ▪ Extended weather information overview

This is how it will look when the Weather watch is set for a specific airport:

Step 1: Log on OpsControl
Weather watch can be accessed either directly from PPS using the OpsControl-button under the home tab
in the top ribbon or opscontrol.ppsflightplanning.com
Step 2: Activate the feature
To activate the feature, enter the settings page via the Settings icon in the top-right corner

Step 3: Select Weather
When opening Airport suitability for the first time, the user will be prompted to enter the default values to be used.
Clicking Add thresholds will open the threshold setting window.
In this window, the threshold values are added in three steps: Departure, Destination and Alternate. Each step represents the set of default values to be used for all airports when used as either Departure, Destination or alternate.
Select Weather under the OpsControl tab and click Add Thresholds to define a default value.

Step 4: Define values / thresholds
The figure below indicates the function of the thresholds and how they are interpreted when Weather Watch decodes a forecast.
Enter the threshold values suitable for the intended operation.
The left column defines the point where the colour turns green
The right column defines the point where the colour turns red.
As a rule of thumb, Weather Watch will always be conservative, meaning that if the weather is on the threshold between two areas, the most critical will always be used as the actual weather. In the example, the marginal value for the ceiling is set to 500 and the value for closed is set to 300.
If the value is on the defined value, the most critical scenario will always be displayed.

Ref | Name | Description |
---|---|---|
1 | Airport type | The step indicates when the defaults values are to be used. In the case above, the entered default values will be applied to all airports being used as departure |
2 | Threshold category | The weather phenomena in the forecast the values are applied to |
3 | Marginal value | The safe end of the marginal area. This is displayed as the boundary between green and yellow |
4 | Closed value | The critical end of the marginal area. This is displayed as the boundary between yellow and red |
5 | Back | Go back to the previous step |
6 | Deactivate | Denies the selected user access to CrewBriefing. |
7 | Next/Complete | Go to the next step. If on the last step, the button will indicate complete. This saves the settings and closes the window |
Step 5: Complete the setup
To complete the default value setup, enter values for all threshold categories in all three steps. Save and complete the setup by clicking Complete in the last step. A notification will appear at the bottom of the screen indicating that the configuration is successfully saved, and the DEFAULT line will appear in the airport list.
Once the default values are successfully added for all relevant airports, click Add in the top right corner to add specific values for individual airports. Once the setup has been completed, return to the OpsControl flight list and refresh the page.
